UNITED KINGDOM POINT-OF-CONTACT ROLE FOR IADC SPACE OBJECT RE-ENTRY CAMPAIGNS ASSIGNED TO SPACE INSIGHT [AUGUST 2007]

Acting on behalf of British National Space Centre (BNSC) Space Insight has been assigned the role of United Kingdom point-of-contact for the Inter-Agency Space Debris Co-ordination Committee’s annual space object re-entry campaigns.

Every year one object re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere from space is selected for co-ordinated study by all the member agencies of the IADC. The aim of the exercise is to enable prediction tools to be tested against each other, and sensors around the world to attempt to obtain observations on the re-entry target to test their observational accuracies and compare orbit calculations.

The role of the point-of-contact is to co-ordinate activities within their particular agency to obtain observations, disseminate orbits and enter predictions on the chosen target object.
